VOICES OF THE AFRICAN DIASPORA
February 16th, 7:30PM | First United Methodist Church
February 18th, 7:00PM | Kings Center on Auraria Campus (Denver, CO)
Explore the rich history of African American Orchestral Music
In keeping with its tradition of featuring under-performed works, the Chamber Orchestra explores the rich history of African-American orchestral music. Often intentionally excluded from the traditional canon, these incredible African American composers should be as familiar to you as Bach or Beethoven.
This is a special, one-time performance - NOT a Subscription Series concert. Subscribers should secure your ticket today!
The concert begins with a gleeful, playful overture by Scott Joplin. Then, we feature the incomparable Stephanie Ann Ball and GeDeane Graham, with Julia Perry’s Stabat Mater and William Grant Still’s From the Hearts of Women.
The concert also features Joseph Schwantner’s New Morning for the World, a setting some of Martin Luther King Jr.’s most compelling oratory for orchestra, and we conclude with Florence Price’s compelling arrangement of the African American spiritual My Soul’s Been Anchored in the Lord.
